SafeNav at CITNAV 2025: Advancing Safer, Smarter Naval Navigation in Colombia
Bogotá, Colombia - SafeNav was honored to participate in the VII Congress of Science, Technology and Innovation (CITNAV 2025) hosted by the Armada Nacional de Colombia. Representing SafeNav on the ground, Mario Dussan joined naval innovators, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss how human–machine collaboration and COLREG-compliant decision support can raise the bar for operational safety across surface, riverine, and autonomous missions.

Why CITNAV matters
CITNAV is one of Latin America’s most important defense innovation forums—bringing together the Navy, academia, and industry to accelerate naval modernization and mission readiness. For SafeNav, it’s a natural venue to share lessons from Europe and broaden collaboration with Colombia’s maritime and defense community.
What we showcased
1) COLREG-Compliant Decision Support (DSS)
SafeNav’s AI co-pilot fuses bridge sensor inputs (AIS, radar/ARPA, EO/IR, GNSS/INS) to provide real-time, explainable manoeuvre advice that aligns with COLREGs. The goal: reduce cognitive load, standardize best practice, and enable earlier, safer course/speed changes, particularly in confined, congested, or low-visibility environments.
2) Interoperability by Design
Software-only approach that runs on existing ship sensors - no major retrofits
Open APIs for C2/C4ISR interoperability and read-only integration with ECDIS/bridge networks
Modular architecture supports riverine, littoral, and blue-water use cases
3) Uncrewed & Autonomous Missions (USV/UAV/UGV)
We discussed SafeNav’s AI algorithms for remote control and supervised autonomy, including:
Integrated COLREG logic for autonomous or assisted navigation
Risk management and smooth handover between human pilot and assisted modes
An Autonomous Unit Control Center that can be embarked on a mother ship or run remotely, with secure comms, mission logging, and replay for training
4) Mission Planning in Extreme Environments
From ARC Bolívar and Antarctic operations to riverine patrols, SafeNav supports safe route planning, enhanced situational awareness, and operator decision-making when conditions are dangerous, dynamic, or data-sparse.

“We shared how SafeNav brings concrete, deployable capabilities to accelerate naval modernization with safety, interoperability, and intelligent control. Our DSS/COLREG engine supports decision-making in complex navigation, reduces cognitive load, and raises operational safety across surface and river missions, while paving a trusted path to supervised autonomy.”

Our commitment to Colombia’s naval community
We’re grateful to the Armada Nacional de Colombia for its leadership and vision. SafeNav remains committed to accompanying the technological transition toward a safer, more autonomous, and more resilient fleet, working shoulder-to-shoulder with operators, trainers, and system integrators.
About SafeNav
SafeNav is a human-in-the-loop, COLREG-compliant AI co-pilot for maritime navigation. Built by mariners and engineers, it turns fragmented bridge data into clear, auditable manoeuvre advice, supports C4ISR interoperability, and provides a stepwise path from decision support to supervised autonomy for USV/ASV operations.
